HI, please can you help?
My husband suffers with Dystonia (Spasmodic Torticollis) and had DBS surgery in 2006. He also has AF and went through a failed Internal Cardio version last August. He is diabetic, (no drugs though, just diet) has High blood pressure and collateral (hereditary). He takes a lot of drugs but is struggling with a situation which he has been told maybe in his head.
In November last year he was experiencing numbness and weakness in his left leg and foot. 3 weeks later this had progressed to his left arm. 2 weeks ago his shoulder is affected. The weakness now is so severe that he cannot do the most simplest of tasks with his right arm, i.e. undoing a shirt button or unlocking a door with a key. Even putting his coat or a jumper on is affected from his shoulder.
He saw an emergency neurologist in December and an examination which showed the weakness and the reflexes were also affected. He was sent for a CT scan which was all clear thank goodness so a stroke is ruled out. The Neurologist did say that he couldn't rule out a Tia and if it was it would improve on its own. However, with the Neurologist instruction, we decided to turn his Brain Stimulator off for a while to see if that was having any affect. It didn't and it is now back on.
We have this week seen his Neurologist who examined him again and has said that he wants to carry out a contrast CT as he can't have an MRI because of his Stimulator. He also said that he was expecting this to come back normal and that these symptoms could be in his head!!!
My husband has been through the wars the last couple of years agreed, but he has a therapist that he talks to discuss through his feelings and to give him mental exercises to relax etc.
He knows his body and is adamant it is not in his head and to be frank I do as well.
Our Neurologist is a lovely man and is so good, but how do we question and push that it's not in his head and the physical issues he has are real.
Thank you
Kind regards
Judy Stevenson
