Suggest Treatment For Cold And Ear Irritation After Thyroid Surgery

16 years ago I had surgery to remove half my thyroid (multiple nodes inside) as well as a mass (benign) that had grown behind the thyroid. 9 years later I had to have the other half of the thyroid removed because it had become multi-nodular. Two weeks ago I got what I thought was just a cold or ear irritation that has now just moved to the right side. Last night while complaining and holding my neck I realized I could feel a mass where the original one was removed 16years ago. Could the swollen gland be a result of it? Could it be cancer this time?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Benign thyroid lesions that got operated and removed 16 and 9 years ago that seemingly recurred may not be related to the present problem of ear irritation and cold
- The present problems started with cold that is nasal and pharyngeal inflammation
- This gets transmitted to the middle ear through Eustachian tube
- Fluid build up causes ear irritation and develop into hearing loss, pain, mastoiditis and so on

I would advise you the following:
- Consult your doctor immediately
- Get started on proper prescription based antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and decongestant medicines
- Take rest
- Ultrasound of the neck and FNAC for the development of nodule
Surgery may be needed later on.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
