My last brain MRI for follow-up on pituitary surgery demonstrated a tortuous carotid. So, my neurosurgeon ordered an MRA of the brain/neck to rule out aneurysms. My insurance denied the claim. How else could he have checked for an aneurysm and is this something I should have reviewed?
Though MRA is an investigation popular in diagnosing aneurysms, there are investigations like CT Angiography and Digital subtraction angiography which can be used to know the presence of aneurysms. Your doctor has recommended MRA because it is more informative than a CT angiography while a Digital subtraction angiography is a more invasive procedure done in cath lab and hence more expensive.
