Suggest Remedy For Angelman Syndrome

Hi, My son is 11 years old and has Angelman Syndrome. He came home from school on the last day of school with half of his front tooth cracked off. He was fine for day after this, but after about 4 days he started to become very agressive and had severe mood changes. We thought this was due to pain from the cracked tooth. I made three visits to the ER with him over four days trying to figure out what was going on. The doctors kept saying his tooth should not cause this pain. The pediatric dentist went ahead and scheduled surgery to do a root canal, and fix the tooth. I went back to the ER again due to his agitated state and the feeling that he was having severe pain. The finally did x-rays, ultrasound and blood work. We then found out that he had swallowed something and it turned out to be a small electrical wire of some kind that he passed on his own. They also then did an upper scope and a lower scope and found that his middle and lower esophagas were very irritated and inflamed. Evidentally he had has acid reflux for a long time and couldn t communicate it to anyone due to the Angelman Syndrome and being non communicative. So he is now on liquid Prilosec and Curafate to try and ease the pain from that. This was all found out over a week ago and the meds starting then also. He continues to be very agressive, hitting, biting, pinching, kicking. Crying all the time. Acts as if in pain, grabbing his ears and whines when eating (when I can get bites into him between him hitting me). After asking and asking and reading what I could find I am now wondering if all his symptoms could be related to the fact that around the time all this happened we had just finished weening him off Kepra. The nuerologist never mentioned any side effects that could happen, so to my surprise when reading some of the blogs out there, it seems that a lot of people weening off Kepra have some of the same side effects. Do you think that this could be it and if so how long can these withdrawal symptoms last? It has now been almost two weeks since his behavior, agression, and moodiness all started. Just a side note, right after weening him off the Kepra we also weened him off Risperadone. His EEG and MRI two months ago showed no seizure activity and the Nuerologist feels he is going through puberty and that there was no need for him to be on these medications anymore. He has not had a seizure since weening him off. Thank you so much for any help or advice you can give me. The doctors all say that his moodiness and agitated state are from mainly the acid reflux, then the swollen pulp in his tooth that was removed and should get better in a week to two weeks. It has been that long and things are not improving. I have tried alternating Motrin and Tylenol too and that has done nothing. He take Clonidine and Clonazepam at night for sleep and he is so agitated that he is hardly sleeping Thanks again so much, Sheri Gartner

Pediatrician 's  Response
Sorry to hear about your child's distress. Yes, any pain and discomfort as with the reflux can increase agitation in your child. Regarding the medicine withdrawal, I presume weaning off resperidone is more likey to bring about mood changes. Talk to the prescribing physician about that. Keppra withdrawal is a less likely cause. with seizures controlled, it will not be required any more either.
