Suggest Remedies For Shingles And Blisters

Hello, I have had shingles and the blisters have healed and the rash almost gone but still noticeable. I still have extreme sensitivity and itching where the redness once occurred, is there anything I can do to relieve this intense itching and burning at times. It is coming up 5 weeks now and am worried it will never end. Anna

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history you are having post herpetic neuralgia.
My treatment advice is -
1. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily.
2. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine for itching.
3. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for pain.
4. Other treatment options are oral gabapentin, carabamazepine and amitryptiline taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
Dr. Harshit bhachech.
