Suggest Precautions To Reduce Elevated Sugar Levels?

Hello, my elder sister, age 80yrs., on Dec. 21st, 2013, has severe
Rheumatoid Arthritis, since many years. Is on a lot of medicines, including Methatextrate - 06 pills once a week, has been having it for several years. Her Hb1 Ac - yesterday was 10.02! And Fasting sugar was 355! Her Dr. prescribed Glucophage 500mg once a day, in the morning. Today her Fasting sugar had come down to 209. We've made adjustments in her Diet, alongside the Glucophage.
She's handicapped, because of the R. Arthritis, so physical activity is, by and large, greatly absent, except for a short walk to the family lounge, with a walker accompanied by an attendant.
What may we do further, in the way of DIET adjustments, so as NOT to let this elevated sugar level, ever happen again?!
We would highly appreciate your EXPERT ADVICE.
Thank you,
Mrs. Fareeda Farooq Niazi
P. S. My email is on my maiden name!

hi,
your concern is understandable. first let me know if she was on long term steroids for Rheumatoid Arhtritis , which could be the cause of her late onset diabetes!!!!
Apart from glucophage, there are other anciliary methods of bringing her diabetes into control. let her keep away from sweets and candies (liked by many elderly), sweet bread and buns, foods with high glycemic index (you can google for the list). Before that let her doctor check if the diabetes is not secondary to drugs she took-- there is literature showing methotrexate as a rare cause of diabetes!!!!!!!!!.
all the best.
