Suggest Medicine For Diabetics That Does Not Affect Heart Function

Hello sir/mam,
My grandfather (age 80) is suffering from diabetes and hypertension. He also has some heart problems (pulse rate is consistently around 40-45). If he takes drugs for hypertension, pulse rate decreases, also diabetes drugs affects heart functioning. What should be the medication?

Hello Pooja
I am Dr Mittal
I have read your query
And I would like to help you.

I understand that your 80 year old father has diabetes and hypertension with a low heart rate.
I am assuming this query is regarding the low heart rate specifically, and I am assuming that his sugars are well controlled.

Unfortunately, in your query, you have missed mentioning the medicines that he is already taking. And I frankly think that this low heart rates that you have observed may be due to the blood pressure medicines he is on. I think that your doctor may have prescribed a drug of the group beta blockers. This medicine may be the cause of the low heart rate.

The chances are unlikely that the medicines for diabetes are the cause of bradycardia. On the other hand, increased potassium levels may be the cause of the bradycardia. So I would suggest you have the potassium levels tested.

I think you should meet your doctor again.
The beta blockers may in fact increase the sugars in his case.

Best of luck
