Suffering From Bilateral Hip Replacements, Have Hemochromatosis. On Pain Medication. Treatment?

I suffer from bilateral hip replacments. I also have a completely destroyed right ankle. I have hemochromatosis which has given me the skeleton of an eighty year old. I was treated with pain meds but was stopped the prescription due to abuse in 2006.I am no longer an addict and I wish to start pain meds so I can lead a life that is not ruled by pain. The pain so dominates my life sometimes I feel as if I was better off dead. Please empathize with me and if possible reach out to me.I lead a life with no hope and desperately depressed and filled with pain. Please offer some help,i am a good person in need of treatment.Thank you Paul Quinn

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Your problem of addiction to pain medication was many years ago. Therefore, the plan for introduction of pain medication should start with simple pain killers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. If these do not bring adequate relief then tramadol or codeine can be tried. Morphine would be the next step.
You could also consider seeing a pain specialist who could discuss lifestyle changes that may help you cope with the pain you are suffering.
There are many options available to manage chronic pain if these simple measures do not bring adequate results.
