Stop Breathing, What Measures Should I Have Taken ?

My 8 month old son was about to start crying when he froze like a statue and stopped breathing. We patted him on the back held him upside down he was slow comming around until we gave him some water. What could of caused it? What measures should I have taken ? Is it OK for him to sleep 10 minutes after ?

It is called breath holding spasm.Sometimes it followed by excessive crying,unwanted,uncomfortable condition and also occurs after some painful condition,severe coughing,highgrade fever.
You should consult pediatrician for further guidance.
