Son Has Sinus. Did Operation For 3 Times. Removed Root Of The Sinus And Stitched. Had Bleeding, Blocked By Clipping. Problem?

My son 22, resident of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, having a case of Recurrent Preauricular Sinus (Lt Ear) and operated three times within 2 months period at Rajasthan Hospitals, Ahmedabad. On 11th August, 2013 he was operated, doctor removed root of the sinus and stitched. On 17th suddenly blooding started and doctor dressed with pressure bandage. On 29th August again non stop blooding started for 2-3 hours, we took him to Ahmedabad and finally doctor blocked his nerve by clipping. My question is : 1) Is there any problem in clipping the nerve ? 2) Will this sinus develop again ?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,

I am Dr Sriram Nathan an ENT surgeon who has treated and operated close to five hundred pre auricular sinus.

I understand your concern and also the problem you are facing

You have mainly asked two questions which i will try to answer:

1. Clipping the nerve-I am assuming that the doctor clipped the artery or the vein to stop the bleeding and not the nerve. The local word for these may have been confusing to you and you might have thought that he clipped the nerve. You have to clip the blood vessel to stop bleeding and this will not have nay effect either on the recovery or the healing in any way so do not worry. The main aim at that point is to control the bleeding and since that has been done you have nothing to worry about.

2. Recurrence- By my experience if you take the root of the sinus and if you follow the sinus completely and remove it in total then the chance of recurrence is less and minimal. However you can confidently say that only after a complete recovery takes place and after say about three or four months.

Hope your doubts are clear and you can get back to me if you have any more doubts

regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
