Shoulder Blade In Pain, Pins And Needles In Arm, Neck Pain. Taking Motrin. What Is Going On?

not sure if i should seek ER help or not. For 6 mths i have complained (yes to my dr) about my right shoulder blade feeling as though it has fallen asleep... It happens out of the blue no precursor warning, standing sitting, laying. this past tuesday night i had a hard time sleeping due to the pins & needles feeling in my back and now my arm (again right side). Wednesday morning my right side of my neck also hurt- felt like whiplash. All symptoms have incresingly gotten worse and now i have it starting on the left side as well. i am taking motrin 800 around the clock to help with the pain as instructed by my OBGYN (another long story, i called him to see if this was side effects of LUPRON DEPOT ). he said it sounded like a pinced nerve and to call my GP- however, my GP was already out of the office on friday so now i am waiting but last night and so far today the pain meds are not even taking the edge off.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All the symptoms in the description are suggestive of Cervical disc disease producing the typical symptoms.

The initial management of this condition is as follows -

* Rest: A soft cervical collar is advisable. It should not be used for more than a week or two as it may worsen the condition with prolonged usage.

* Medicines: Analgesic are needed in the acute phase. Muscle relaxants are essential for relieving muscle spasms once the acute pain subsides. Neurotropic vitamins like METHYLCOBALAMINE (activated Vit B12) or PREGABALIN will help in alleviating the neuropathic pain.

* Cervical traction: may enlarge the disc space, permitting the prolapse to subside. Intermittent cervical traction for not more than 30 minutes at a time. Weight upto 8kg can be added.

* Physiotherapy: Once the acute phase of pain has subsided, Isometric strengthening exercises of the paravertebral muscles are started. Moist heat can be useful

* Epidural steroids: are useful for patients with severe radicular pains in the limbs

If you don't find any symptom relief with the above measures, you may need an MRI scan to diagnose the condition and an orthopedic surgeons consultation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
