Results Of CT Chest Scan Are Attached. What Is Diffuse Bronchial Thickening And Bank Like Areas If Atelectadis Mean?

Impression: The lungs remain hyperinflated with mild central bronchiectasis in the lowere lungs and dissuse bronchial walll thickening. New bandlike areas of atelectasis and mucoid impaction have developed in the lower lobe. Other areas of scarring/chronic atelectasis in the right middle and lowere lobes are stable.. No central endobronchial obstruction.
The above are findings on a CT chest scan; what does diffuse bronchial wall thickening mean? Also what are banklike areas of atelectasis?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It would be important to know the age of the patient whose CT report is being discussed.

It says that the lungs are hyperinflated, meaning the lung volume is increase. There is also enlargement in the pipe like structures (bronchioles) near to the hilum (portion where vessels and main airways enter the lungs) Also the lower lobes bronchi show wall thickening. There are not serious changes but seen over time and may be due to many problems like smoking or repeated lung infections.

There is also band like atelectasis mentioned in the report. This is a mild form of collapse of lung tissue which appears like a band. These have to be considered as a part of chronic lung changes in the patient occurring over months to years. The patient does not have a serious problem but he is prone to develop lung infections earlier than in normal people. If the patient is a smoker, it should be stopped to halt the progress of further lung changes.

Patient can get relief through use of medications should there be any breathing difficulty.

Hope this helps
