Pregnant, Took Duphaston For Cramps. Ultrasound Then Showed Nothing, Suspect Blighted Ovum. What Is This ?

Hi I am supposed to be 7 weeks 3 days pregnant. I went to the doctor when I thought I was 5 weeks because I was having cramps. He gave me Duphaston and folic acid along with prenatal vits. Asked me to go back in one week. Went when I thought I was 6 weeks (exactly one week later) had a vaginal ultrasound but nothing was found. Again he told me to come back. Got a little scared because the internet said it was either a blighted ovum or an ectopic pregnancy. So I went back at 6 weeks 4 days. I did not see the same doctor saw someone else. He did a very quick scan and said blighted ovum (an empty ges sac measuring 0.8 cm). He said it was only 5 weeks. We went home very upset. Went today six days later to see how long I would have to wait. Another doctor did a scan and said he could see a healthy pregnancy of 4 weeks 6 days. The gestational sac was 11mm and now contained a yolk sac. He said he could not find a heartbeat of fetal pole yet because it was to early. I am just wonder who is right will this pregnancy turn out ok. How can I be only 4 weeks 6 days (I have read the sac would only measure 6 mm) I am so confused I should be 7 weeks 3 day. Can you give me some advise.

Thanks for posting your query.

I understand your distress and confusion. Don't worry, as it looks like a delayed conception.

The pregnancy in itself should be fine, even though it is what we call as a delayed conception.

By your dates , you may be 6 or 7 weeks but date the pregnancy with the earliest scan where we see the baby. The earliest baby can be seen in transvaginal scan is at 5-6 weeks.

Even before the baby can be seen on the scan, we can see the yolk sac which is the structure feeding the baby. That appears on scan around 4-5 weeks.
So everything is going by plan in you case. So do not worry yourself.

We can wait until the gestational sac is 25 mm before we call it an empty sac/blighted ovum.

The early pregnancy cramps are very common and are due to the bodily changes and hormonal effect.

I would suggest you repeat a scan in 2 weeks when everything will be clear. There is more than 90% chance that you will see a baby with a heart beat in that scan.

Please continue folic acid, duphaston is optional as its not helpful.

Hope this helps, take care!
