Pregnant Having Swelling On Legs And Feet, Pain In The Calves. What Can Be Done?

Hi, my wife is pregnant, we are in holiday in Spain. She is drinking lots of water - is there any other way to avoid legs and feet swelling. She is 22 weeks pregnant, but yesterday her calves and muscles in legs really hurt and were very tight. She is now struggling to walk. Is it a case of just resting legs or is there anything else she can do? Thanks

hi and thanks for the query,
it would be interesting if she has abnormally just started drinking a lot of water or not. If that s the case, during a fasting blood sugar to exclude diabetes mellitus shall be very important.
It is not unusual to experience limb swelling in pregnancy. However. a careful evaluation should be done to exclude the association of the swelling to pregnancy induced hypertension or eclampsia. Urine proteins are very important and measurements of the blood pressure compared to the basal blood pressure to exclude pre eclampsia.
While waiting to meet the obstetrician to exclude all of these possibilities, its worth while that she avoid long standing positions, and assume positions when lying done with the limbs higher above the rest of the body to facilitate drainange .
Thanks and hope this helps,

Hey,
Swelling of legs is very common phenomenon in pregnancy especially for women doing lot's of traveling in sitting position. it may be simply due to dependent position of her legs. The following tips may help her
1. Sleeping in left lateral position
2. Mild elevation of legs while sleeping/lying down
3. Avoid long hours of continuous sitting
4. gentle massaging of the limbs

But once you are back from travel, make sure you check her blood pressure and her urine for protinuria, as swelling of legs can be a sign of pregnancy induced hypertension

If she is having one/ two calf muscles swollen, warm and very painful to touch, it can be because of Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT), which is also very common during pregnancy, immediately seek medical care.

Take care

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

She needs to be examined and investigated...
Calf vein thrombosis (clot) has to be excluded on priority basis...
Anaemia, low protein, sugar, electrolyte disturbance, venous obstruction or varicosity - all may need consideration...
An examination may clarify most of the issues / take her to a doctor

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
