Pregnant, Have UTI Symptoms, Advised Megacv. Is It Safe During Pregnancy?

Hi Dr. Samuel, How are you? I am 2 months pregnant and I was showing some signs of UTI . My GP did the test and it was confirmed, now the doctor has adviced me to take megacv 625mg. So, I was wondering that is it safe to have it during pregancy. Also, I think it has a salt called Amoxycillin and I am allergic to pencillin group meds. Can you recommend any other medicine??? Regards R

Hi ,
Thanks for writing in to Healthcare Magic!
There is great debate in medical fraternity about safe antibiotics during pregnancy, there is no ideal candidates but many can be used without any perceivable harm. But they should be used only when benefit clearly exceeds the risk.
During pregnancy the tests on urine may indicate UTI and even bacteria can grow but may be insignificant colonizer.
Please get a physical examination, CBC and procalcitonin test to confirm it.
Azithromycin is a reasonably safe option you can bank upon, your gynecologist would know the regimen.
If you have any further query please let me know I would try to answer it for you.
Wish you a great health!
