Hello,
Asbestos on long term exposure can cause a lung disease even lung cancer.
Asbestos may cause pleural effusion and pleural plaques as well as thickening .
even it can cause lung cancer on long term exposure.

but it does not cause any thyroid enlargement. it may be due to some other cause
like Iodine deficiency, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's disease, Thyroid cancer etc.

Further as he have both thyroid and lung problems, it is better to rule out any autoimmune diseases by investigating for antinuclear antibodies.
Please do the complete thyroid profile and consult a endocrinologist.

Hope this helps.

Wishing you good health.
