Performed Blood Test As A Follow Up To Thyroid Removal Operation. ESR Value Exceeded The Normal Range. Underlying Cause?

My wife did her periodic blood tests today and for the first time her ESR is over the range (26, range 18-25). She does her tests every three months as a follow up to the thyroid removal operation she had 2 years ago. Previously her ESR was below the range (never exceeded 8-10), what could be the reason for such a sudden change? does it indicate something?

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,

Your wife was operated for thyroid almost 2 year ago. This test ESR, is the rate at which red blood cells sediment in a period of one hour.

Common hematology test, and is a non-specific measure of inflammation.

This non specific marker of inflammation and useful to monitor prognosis and response therapy.

Please do not worry it is near normal and can be high due to low hemoglobin which it needs to be correlated clinically.

The reading which you have reported is 26 at the end of 1st hour which is almost normal.

I do not think there is something serious at all.

If required just get Thyroid function T3 T4 and TSH and consult your Physician.

Hope this clears your doubt

Take care
Good Luck.
