Pain In Mouth Where Sub Mandibular Gland Was Removed Due To Tumor. Took Norco. Is This The Cause For Concern?
Hello Doctor, My mother had submandibular gland removal due to a tumor that was cancerous in 2010. She still complains of pain on that side of her mouth that the gland was removed. I also noticed her jaw muscles are very weak to where her jaw veers towards the side of the affected area. Is this a concern that needs to be addressed? Her doctor doesn t seem to think this is a concern. She takes norco occasionally. She also lost her appetite as well. Please advise. Thank you!
Hi, her mandible must have been removed along with the submandibular glands if the jaw deviates towards the side of the excision and she needs a guide bite prosthesis for that. Otherwise just weakness of muscles on that side should not be a cause of concern. Regarding pain, some pain in the region of resection can be normally there in few patients because of neurological reasons but severe pain or a gradually increasing pain should be a cause for concern. Your patient must be on a regular follow up with the operating surgeon and he/she must have been examining the area regularly for a possible recurrence which is the real worry in malignant cases. Regards
