Muffled Hearing In Left Ear. ENT Did Hearing Test. Diagnosed For Labryinthitis And Given Prednisone. Tumor?

I have muffled hearing in left ear. Had dizzy spell last night. ENT did hearing test today. Says hearing is worse in left ear than one year ago. Claims I have labryinthitis and gave me prednisone for 2 weeks, then a recheck of hearring. I am worried it is a tumor, even though dr. said they are usually benign. I have had diminished hearing in left ear for about a year. Went to ENT for it then and told me it was stress related. I do have ringing in that ear as well.
Thank you.

Decreased hearing which is gradually progressive should be investigated. You must have undergone Pure tone audiometry and the type of loss whether conductive or sensory neural will determine the further course of action. So you need to discuss this aspect with your doctor. Sensory neural hearing loss can be corrected by hearing aids and conductive hearing loss can usually be corrected by surgery or medicines. Common causes of hearing loss which are gradually progressive over a year are usually not infective. There can be transient labrynthitis which can cause dizziness as well as hearing loss. Tumour related hearing loss has very low incidence as these tumours are uncommon and you need to undergo MRI of brain with special reference to 7-8th nerve complex and CP angle. Avoid loud sound/noise exposure and otototoxic drugs. Regards.
