Itchy Skin Rashes, Black And Brown, Eczema. Is It An Effect Of Water Contamination?

For the past three years, I have had a very itchy skin rash which has taken on different looks as time progresses. Doctors have told me it was eczema. At one point about 2 years ago, my eyes had little pads formed around the socket areas and these weeped along with my eye lids. Now, for some reason unknown to me, any time I accidently scratch my skin or my puppy digs me, or I scratch my itches, it turns a quick purplish which takes for ever to go away. Then it looks blackish/brown. About the time my arms finally look almost normal, itchy patches pop up and away we go again. I had my water well checked for possible natural gas contamination from a well about a mile from me but the "footprints" tests proved negative. The representative did tell me that it didn't necessarily mean my well wasn't contaminated. I do have lead in my water. That I learned from another test. I can't help but wonder if this is some type of cancer from an internal problem or what. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I thank you. Patricia D. Fiske

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from chronic eczema. We can't pinpoint the cause of this inflammation of the epidermis of the skin. So many causes are told but the exact cause is difficult to find out. The causes may be
1) Lack of good atmosphere
2) Allergy
3) Mites - Antibodies are found in certain people
4) Defective GLA Synthesis - taking GLA give some improvement
So naturally the treatment is avoiding the probable cause and taking GLA.
Otherwise treatment should be aimed at reducing the symptoms, inflammation and itching. Have fat free diet.
Weak steroid for mild eczema is advised. Sometime Strong cortocosteroid oral/injection may be needed. Keep in mind that it has its own side effects.
Definitely it is not due to any underlying cause of cancer.
Treat patiently, avoiding the allergic items, good hygiene and atmosphere and proper ointment will make you alright. Once getting alright you have to be careful for recurrence.
Best wishes
