Is There A Treatment For Nutcracker Esophagus?

Hi Doctor. I am a 41 year old female that was just recently diagnosed with hypertensive LES and nutcracker esophagus. I am on 4 different kinds of medication now and I am having the balloon dilitation in about 4 weeks. Have you ever seen/heard of anyone that has been cured of these problems? My husband and I want to have a 2nd baby within the next year (we met later in life) and I can't do that being on all of these class D meds. Can you give any insight? Thank you.

hello

thank you for trusting HCM

dear most cases of nutcracker esophagus can be treated with a combination of medication and home remedies. In rare cases, you may need additional treatment.

Medications that may help treat nutcracker esophagus include:

1.calcium channel blockers
2.proton pump inhibitors
3.nitrates, such as sublingual nitroglycerin (Nitrostat)
4.hyoscyamine (Levsin)
5.anticholinergic drugs

The following home remedies can also help to relax your esophagus:

drinking warm water
doing breathing exercises and behavioral techniques for relaxation
avoiding foods and drinks that trigger your symptoms
If medication and home remedies aren’t providing any relief, your doctor may suggest additional treatment, such as:

1.a botulinum toxin (Botox) injection to relax the muscles in your esophagus
2.surgery to cut one of the muscles in your esophagus to weaken contractions
3.a POEM procedure (peroral endoscopic myotomy), which uses an endoscope rather than traditional surgery to cut back a section of muscle within the esophagus.

I think I answered to your question if you have more questions feel free to ask.
