Is It Safe To Take Topamax?

I was given topomax not long after giving birth; it was to treat migraines. The onset of these migraines was around the age of 13. When topomax was prescribed as an alternative medication since several others didn t seem to keep them under control, I was instructed by the physician of how to begin the medication as well as how to slowly build up to the dosage he felt would be needed. However, the second day I took the lowest possible dose, I had the strangest effects. I couldn t sleep and walked around at night in a daze as if on some some sort of illegal or street drug. I also felt as if I were having an out of body experience and looking down watching myself. Needless to say, the medication was immediately stopped per my physician. I have a friend whose 15 year old daughter was recently given this med for something other than migraines or seizures. She too, after only the second day had a similar experience. IS THIS DRUG SAFE? It seems I hear nothing other than severe and unusual side effects. I would like your input regarding benefits vs. bizarre side effects?

I completely understand your concerns regarding topamax (topiramate). Insomnia, blizzard senses and other psychotic symptoms are the known side effects of this drug.
Having said so, I would like to say that it does not occur to each and every one. Many of the patients I have seen does not have these side effects and there migraine/epilepsy is under strict control.
And if the risks were more than benefits, then it's very difficult for a drug to enter the market or even if it does, it will be withdrawn if such high frequency of side effects are seen.
Hope you are satisfied with my explanation. Thank you.
