Is It Okay To Take Both Trazodone And Zoloft For Sleep Disorders?

my Endocrinologist prescribed 50 mg of Trazodone to help me with sleep problems. I am also taking 50 of Zoloft. He said it was O.K. to take both meds, but if I see improvement in my sleep patterns, I should taper off the Zoloft. I would appreciate your opinion on this. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Both of these medications are anti depressants though the mechanism of action may vary slightly.
They both cause increases in the level of a chemical called serotonin in the brain.

It is possible that high levels of this chemical can occur due to interaction between these agents. This can sometimes be associated with serious consequences.

In general the use of both of these together is contraindicated unless the benefits far outweigh the possible risks.

You may want to speak to your doctor.

I hope this helps
