Is It Fine To Take Niftran During My Pregnancy Period?

My wife is 21 week pregnant & she is diagonosed as urine infection after urine culture

Results are as follows



Colony Count-10 to the power 6 , Organism E Coli

Antibiotic Preference

amikacin

gentamicin

ceftriaxone

cefotaxime

levofloxacin

ofloxacin

nitrofurantoin



& She is advised to take Niftran 100 , 2 Cap daily x 8 days

Is it OK, please advice..

I have gone through your question and I understood your problem.
Tab niftran consists of nitrofurantoin. Nitrofurantoin is pregnancy category B. It is one of the few drugs commonly used in pregnancy to treat UTIs. The drug should not be given to women in late pregnancy due to the potential risk of hemolytic anemia in the newborn, as the newborn has not yet developed the enzymatic pathways necessary for glutathione metabolism and the drug may cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells.
