Is A Hysterectomy The Best Way Forward?

I have just come out of hospital after having a hystroscopy. The doctor said that my uterus is blocked with adhesions from surgery to remove pre-cancer cells. He said he has tried to break the adhesions but doubts whether it is successful. I have to go back in November to discuss whether to have a laposcopy. Given that I was steralised 13 years ago, he said that there are probably adhesions to the outside aswell. I just wondered whether there is any point to keep going back for minor surgery or whether a hysterectomy is the way forward. I am 42 now.

Hello and welcome,

I understand that you had presence of pre cancer cells as well as blocked uterus due to surgery [ uterine synechiae in medical terms].

If pre cancer cells were detected earlier, you need regular follow up with a procedure called endometrial biopsy to see if they recur. Adhesions do not allow this to be done. So follow up of this condition becomes impossible as the doctor was not able to break the adhesions.

About the female sterlisation surgery, the adhesions due to these are minimal in most cases as it is a minor surgery [ assuming that a surgery was done for that, if it was a chemical sterlisation then adhesions may be there].

So I agree with you that considering the difficulty in endometrial biopsy as well as a history of pre cancer cells in the past a hysterectomy is a better option. You may leave the ovaries behind if possible after discussion with your doctor so that menopausal symptoms will not develop.

Hope this satisfies your query.
