Infant Had An Appearance Of Crooked Mouth For A Short Period. Any Neurological Disorder?

Hi, my daughter is 18 months old. About 10 days ago, we suddenly noticed her mouth was crooked (her left side of the lower lip lower than the right side). She was drinking water when we first noticed it. It went back to normal very quickly. Since then, this asymmetric face has appeared multiple times everyday, most of the time when she was crying or complaining. It all went back to normal very quickly. She eats, chews, and drinks fine. She jiggles and laughs a lot. I don't know if it is due to some neurological disorder. Your advice will be much appreciated!

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Asymmetric face involving one corner of mouth or recent onset may be suggestive of an underlying neurological problem.

This type of clinical presentation is seen in cranial nerve palsies like facial nerve palsy like Bell's palsy.

And some times clonic twitching of mouth associated with unexplained laugh may be a manifestation of fit.

She needs physical examination and investigations.

Therefore I advise you to consult the pediatrician or pediatric neurologist for examination and further management.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
