How To Treat Stuffy Nose And Headache?

Hi, I ve had a sinus infection for a little over a week and the symptoms have fairly decreased. However, I still suffer from a stuffy nose and occasional mild headaches. I also can t smell or taste anything, which is very frustrating. How long will this last? I am on Amoxicillin.

Hello!
Thank you for the question on HCM!
Regarding your concern II think that the loss of smell is caused by inflammation of the nasal mucosa. It resolves when the inflammation is treated. In some cases after recurrent infection the loss of smell may persist. It is normal during infections of upper respiratory ways. The headache is caused by the abnormal sinus drainage from the edematous nasal mucosa. I would recommend a nasal drop decongestant which would be very helpful. If you have fever antibiotics may be needed. I recommend a full blood work ansld a sinus xray for sinusitis. Sinusitis may be caused by fungal or bacterial infection. Allergies may cause similar symptoms.
So it is important to find the cause of your problems and the proper treatment.
Hope to have been helpful.
Best wishes Dr. Abaz Quka
