Hello. I am a 32 year-old male. Generally in good health. About 11 days ago, I came down with an intense sore throat. I saw white spots/ thick green mucus coating the back of my throat. I also was very lethargic and had headaches. I went to my primary doctor who did rapid strep and throat culture check for strep. Both came back negative. The pain got worse in my throat on the weekend, so I went to a local urgent clinic. The doctor there examined me, ordered another rapid strep(which was negative) and did another throat culture ( also negative). She gave me penicillin and told me to rest. No change after two more days, so I went back to my primary doctor office. My regular doctor was unavailable, so I met with his colleague. She examined me, started me on amoxicillin, and told me to discontinue the penicillin. She stated there was a good chance it was viral and I would need to rest. The pain in my throat has subsided quite a bit, and headaches are virtually gone. I am still lethargic. My main concern is I still have these white patches in my throat. They are slightly swollen and cause some pain. My tonsils were removed several years ago. I have rubbed them with a cotton swap and have observed a green, mucus residue transfer from the spots to the swab. What are these spots and what can I do to get them to go away? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
