How To Get Rid Of Severe Bend In Intestine That Causes Constipation?

I have a severe bend in my intestine which has always caused me constipation. So bad that, since I was in college (and I am now 68) I have taken exlax or other things every night since I was 18. Now, of course, I have diverticulosis (can't BELIEVE I don't yet have diverticulitis, or colon cancer) as my father died at 41 with colon cancer, both of his parents died of (?) some type of cancer and my mother had diverticulitis years ago and her intestines burst and she almost died. I wish there was some way to get rid of the bend in my intestine (well, without cutting it out) but, if not, what is the best thing I can do from now on? Thank you soooo much for any thoughts!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

There is no other than surgical way to fix it. You should have enteroclysis (abdominal CT with oral contrast) to determine where is the narrow area. Surgery is the next step.
If it s about your family cancer history, you should have some genetic tests. You may be HNPCC (hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer) patient or at least familiar tendency for colorectal cancer. You may find some other cancers more possible for you due to genetic changes.
If you havent had colonoscopy recently, you should have one before any surgery.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
