How Effective Is Ortho-tri-cyclen In Preventing Pregnancy?

My doctor is switching my birth control prescription from Tri-Sprintec to Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo. I just finished my first week of my last pack of Tri-Sprintec and am wondering if I should switch to the new pill now or wait until I finish this last pack of Tri-Sprintec. My biggest worry with waiting until I finish the current pack is that I know I will be sexually active during what would then be the first week on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo. Would I be immediately protected from pregnancy when starting the new pill?

Hello,

You should first complete all the pills of Tri Sprintec and then switch to Ortho Tri Cyclen & take it regularly without fail in the same time. In case you forget you should take the pill as soon a s you remember it.

If you are not planning for a baby then you should be going for protected sex. BC pills protect you from pregnancy not sexually transmitted diseases.

Yes, if you take the new pill as prescribed you will be protected from pregnancy, in case of mistakes you can take Emergency pills within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
