Thank you for the query.
I would want to know your age, gender and duration of your diabetes mellitus.
As per the history, you have Type 2 diabetes mellitus, on oral antidiabetic agents, presently, with a Fasting Blood sugar of 140mg% and HbAic of 8.2%. It is desirable to maintain the HbAic level within 7.5% (if not less) in diabetic patients, since this parameter is an indication of the long term control (over 3 months) of the diabetic status.
The present medications prescribed to you are - Galvus Met (850 mg) twice a day, which comprises of Vildagliptin and Metformin (850mg). Both these drugs have a beneficial effect, since they are weight neutral (infact Metformin can help in weight reduction) and are not known to cause Hypoglycemia (low sugar levels). Previously, you were on Amaryl (Glimeperide) 1 mg and Glucophage (Metformin). Glimeperide belongs to a class of drugs called Sulfonylurea, which though very effective in controlling blood sugar, can cause Weight gain and Hypoglycemia (which may be harmful).
The present medications prescribed to you are definitely effective and safe options. I cannot specify the exact reason why your drugs were altered, probably because the desirable HbAic levels were not obtained with your previous drug regimen.
Hope this helps you out.
Regards,
Dr. Ayusmati Thakur
