How Can I Get A Regular Sleep During Night?

I am 57 years old and have had problems with sleeping since I was diagnosed with depression when 27 years old. I am on a drug program including diazepam. I sleep when I can get myself relaxed, but after a few days, I crash and sleep up to 12 hours. My sleep comes after daybreak most days now. My question is, how do I get a regular night of sleep? I am also on a C-Pap machine each night

Diazepam use over longer period may lead to disturbance in sleep as well as dependence. In my practice, I would substitute it with a sleeping pill that has shorter duration of action (such as zolpidem). Check all the medicines you are taking for side effects. Talk to your doctor about your sleep problem. The following tips will help you sleep better. Stick to the same waking time. Avoid sleeping in day time. Spend mornings in bright light. Take regular exercise. Avoid tea/coffee/alcohol at night. Go to bed only when sleepy. Don't lie in bed if you can't sleep for long time. Sit up and read in not too bright light or listen to music. Avoid TV/computer/mobile games at night.
I hope this answers your question.
