General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Noted the history about your 54 years old mother-in-law and understood your concerns. Diabetes can cause problems with all the systems of the body hence this is a dreaded disease. For the body to cope with these problems the first priority is to keep the blood and urine sugar levels as well as HbA1c well under control.

Since she has a problem in passing motion that is sometimes loose stools and sometimes unable to pass stools means constipation needs to be investigated as diabetes does not cause such a problem directly. I would advise her following:
• Get a clinical evaluation by a general surgeon or a gastroenterologist.
• Get the barium studies under direct vision under fluoroscopic control so that the actual cause can be found out.
• Also, get the blood and stool examination to get the information related to diabetes control and any other information adding to the proper diagnosis.
• All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
