Headaches, Nausea, Dizziness. Had Morphine IV, Imitrex, Benadryl. What Caused This?

A couple weeks ago, I was in the Emergency Room for a severe headache, with nausea, and dizziness. There, I was given Reglan & Benadryl, IV, Imitrex, Sub Q, and eventually Morphine IV (I don't know how many mg).

When I was discharged, the headache was less severe, and I was less nauseated. I came home, took 2 Excedrin, and slept for a couple of hours. When I woke up, the headache was mild-to-almost gone.

My first question, is how do I know what, of all that, was really what made me feel better?

I now have a script from my family doc, for Imitrex, but still really don't know when/if I should take it - automatically - verses trying other regular pain meds, first. So, my 2nd question is how do I know whether I should just start with Imitrex (not even knowing for sure if it's a migraine), or whether I should try other pain meds first?

Thank you.

Neurologist 's  Response
Thanks for the query
I understand your concern
Please note that there are many causes of headache like migraine, tension headache and it can also be due to infection/bleed/tumor etc in the brain. The diagnosis of migraine is established after excluding these causes. I feel that you need a detailed evaluation by local; neurologist who will help you through clinical evaluation and if required investigations like brain scan. If the scan is normal, you may benefit with antimigraine treatment. I do not feel that you should be on Imitrex as of now. You may try medications like amitryptililine, valproate, topiramate etc along with rest, relaxation and avoid the precipitating factor. It is difficult to say which medicine helpd you as all of these can do help.

Hope this helps
Best wishes
