Hello,

You have been diagnosed with kidney stones on the right side. You are experiencing pain in the shoulder blade and back. Due to larger kidney stones the urine outflow may become affected, they may restrict the flow of urine, which can cause the kidneys to swell. Thus muscle tension easily spreads to the surrounding areas. Kidney stones commonly cause pain in the middle to the lower back.

As the muscles get tensed in response to pain and discomfort, tension spreads to the surrounding area. Through the built up of a resulting line of tension, the pain caused by the kidney stone are often experienced as pain in the shoulders. Pain due to kidney stones is also experienced in the abdomen, back or groin. Take adequate quantity of fluid and water to help toxins get regularly flushed out of the body.

Other serious causes of kidney pain include kidney cancer, bleeding kidney or polycystic kidney disease. You are suggested to get examined by a urologist / surgeon, get tests and investigations done so that it can be treated (conservative or surgery) as per requirement. You can take NSAIDs, naproxen or ibuprofen, one SOS when needed for relief. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
