Have Pain In The Elbow When Lifting Even Small Things. Have Tennis Elbow And On Medication. What To Do?

I've had tennis elbow for about 5 wks and the first 3 doctors said I needed to rest it. The last doctor I visited (orthopedic surgeon) said there is nothing more to do and I should go back to work and work through the pain. It hurts to lift a coffee cup. The work he suggested I go back to involves repetitive lifting of heavy racks of clothes for 8-10 hrs a day. I've been resting it, taken pain meds, had cortozone (sp) shot and ultrasound therapy with no positive results. Would like another opinion. As stated, 3 "general" doctors said to rest it and not perform the work that caused it, but the surgeon said the opposite. Thank you

Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Your situation is delicate given that 4 doctors have given their opinions about your problem and you seem not satisfied. Well you did not mention if the doctors tried to rule out other causes of your painful elbow such as arthritis, gout etc which if not treated will keep on. I believe that keeping it at rest would have done you much good as there will be absence of pain but if the condition is not treated, as soon as you will start lifting, you will feel the pain. Overuse injury/ wear and tear injury such as the one you are having require physiotherapy.
I suggest you meet a physiotherapist who can help you through with the orthopedic surgeon's advice. Doing some minor lifts several times pay day could really help. What you will require in addition is powerful pain medicine to help you through with the pain while you are on physical therapy.

Hope this helps
