Have Graves Disease. Took Radioactive Iodine Treatment For Goiter. Recent Blood Work Was Elevated. Reason?
Thank you. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 1972 which was treated with propothyroiurical (spelling I am certain is incorrect) after many years and no change in the goiter I took radioactive iodine treatments; which dissolved (?) the goiter but also deadened the thyroid. I have taken thyroid replacement ever since. My recent blood work was elevated so my PCP has phoned in a new scrip for 100 mg of levothyroxine; and increase from the previous 88 mg. I am confused why when the levels are higher the meds are increased ? Can you explain the reason for me. Thank you again
Dear Sir, Hi! The dose increment has been the right decision by your PCP. your thyroid work up being elevated, only suggests that TSH is high, which means thyroid hormones are still low so TSH which comes from pituitary is high. In order to bring down TSH thyroxine dose has to be increased, it is like see-saw with TSH on one end and Thyroxine on the other. Regards!
