Hi and thanks for the query, A thryglossal cysts is a fluid filled cavity that is observed in some people. This cyst is an embryological remnant, meaning normally it should disappear after one is born, but howver tends to persist in some people. the persistence of this cavity usually leads to an indrawing of fluid and after sometime becomes a sac with fluid inside called now a cyst. When this cyst becomes infected by bacteria, since the thyriod region is close to the mouth and nasal passages continouosly exposed to bacteria, this increases thus the likelihood of being infected. Once infected, it could present itself as pain on swallowing, or just neck pain, an abscess that drains spontanoeusly at times. Treatment consists of surgical excision of this cyst by a Head, Neck and Throat surgeon. I suggest you consult your ENT specialist for a proper evaluation and management. Failure to do a surgical excision might lead to recurrent infections and at times formation of abscesses and spread to other structures. Surgery done by an experienced surgeon is accompanied by very favorable outcomes. thanks and best regards, Luchuo, MD.
