Had Sore Throat With Swollen Tonsils. Having Mucus And Difficulty In Swallowing. What To Do?

Three months ago I had a sore throat with swollen tonsils. After two weeks the sore throat went away, however the swollen tonsils remained - no symptoms aside from swelling and regular production of tonsil stones (daily).

This persisted for three weeks when I went to the doctors, who told me they were just still swollen from fighting off the sore throat and it was nothing to worry about, however nearly two months on I still have these swollen tonsils (larger than before), and now have mucus, very slight pain when swallowing and a crackling sensation in my nose. There are no white splotches, however I don't think its excessively red either (hard to tell after so long).

Should I go back to the doctors, or should I simply gargle salt water and wait for it to go away? I don't smoke/drink.
