Grayish Diarrhea, Cramping, Mild Temperature And Nausea. What To Do?

I have bad persistent diarrhea that is gray in color. I have a lot of pain in the whole intestinal area that is not the same as cramping. There is a lot of gurgling. Whenever I eat it seems to start gurgling immediately. I am drinking water.

This started on Friday morning after I had flu like symptoms on Wednesday with a mild temperature, but body aching and a typical weakness. No vomiting but some mild nausea. Ten days prior BM's were a little loose, but not diarrhea.

What should I do ?

Hi and thanks for the query,

persistent diarrhea needs a careful review and evaluation notr only because it could lead to dehydration, but could actually cause malnutrition with adverse consequences on the body s immune system and other organs.

It would be very appropriate to know when this diarrhea actually started and the various therapies that have been tried. Diarrhea with increased temperature and cramping gives a suggestion of an infectious process.

Its mandatory in this case to do a stool examination, culture and sensitivity tests to identify the causative organism and probable antibiotic that could be effective on this organism.

Blood cultures, complete blood counts, C reactive protein levels are initial tests of importance that could give great insight into the possible cause of these symptoms.

Viruses could also be implicated, but cause chronic diarrheas mainly in immunodepressed populations like Cytomegalovirus. Other parasites like cryptopsporidium, Isospora cause diarrhea under similar circumstances. Doing a routine HIV test could also be advisable.

I strongly advise you seek the opinion of your gastroenterologist or internist.

Best regards,

Bain LE, MD.
