Experiencing Dryness & Covered With Mucous After Taking Novacaine Injections

i was given several novacaine injections into my upper gum inorder to prepare me for work on 5 of my front teeth. A day or two later a dry nodule formed in my right nostril which lasted for more than a week along with a huge amount of mucous. I know it was not a cold...I had no cold symtoms. It is several weeks now and my nose is either mucousy or very dry especially around the lower part of my nostrils. I would like to know if the injections could have caused this because there is still some work to be done in the same area.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Novacaine itself is not known to cause the symptoms you are experiencing. There can be two possibilities in your situation.

Firstly, you might have allergy to some component of the injection solution that may have presented as delayed allergic reaction after 2 days causing the symtpoms you are experiencing. Typically, the reaction should subside within 72 hours, you can still try taking Levocetrizine 5 mg (Levocet) once a day for 5 days. If it would be an allergic reaction, it will resolve. Do not forget to inform your dentist about this episode before your procedure starts in the next appointment.

Secondly, the problem may not be related to the local anesthetic you were given and the nose problem might be a co-incidental and separate entity that should be examined and discussed with an ENT specialist.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you need further advise.

Best,
