Ear infection, double dose of cefpodoxime, precautions ?

I accidentally gave our 8 month old daughter double doses of her antibiotic: cefpodoxime . I misread the label and thought it called for 5 ml and the dosage is supposed to be 2.6ml. I did this Sunday night, Monday a.m./pm, Tuesday a.m./pm and caught the mistake this morning when I realized she wasn t going to have enough for 10 days. She is being treated for a bad ear infection .

Thank you for your query.

1. There is no cause for worry.

2. First check the strength of the syrup/ suspension. Is it 40mg/5ml, 50mg/5ml or 100mg/5ml ? What is her weight?

3. The recommended dosage for her is 5mg/kg twice a day (max 200 mg/day). With the lesser strength suspensions, there is no problem at all. Even with the higher strength suspension, you have not overdosed much.

4. The common side effects are diarrhea and skin rashes. Other side effects are rare. If you notice any untoward symptom or sign, get a pediatrician's opinion. Meanwhile you may continue at the recommended dosage. Has she been prescribed ear drops?

I must emphasize that cefpodoxime is a safe antibiotic with a large margin of safety.
