Done LAVH. Numbness, Pain In Thigh. Difficult Bowel Movements. Due To Hysterectomy?

Hi Dr.
I had an LAVH done 3 weeks ago and I have 2 questions. First, I have numbness and some pain on the sides of my thighs since surgery. Second, before surgery I was very regular with my bm's. Now, I struggle to even go a little. I have a feeling of painful pressure to go but find it uncomfortable. Stool softners and prune juice have helped some but I want to get back to my normal routine in the bathroom. Can a hysterectomy surgery cause this problem?

Hi,

Hysterectomy can cause this. The legs need to be kept in lithotomy position [legs raised and bent at knee and hip for 90 degree. This may cause compression of nerves around the knee and cause this pain. Corticosteroids and Bcomplex vitamins for a few days help in relieving this earlier.

Regarding constipation: usually women tend to eat very little after surgey and most of the food is soups and juices that do not form a bulk. If you are still not taking your normal diet, start it as it helps in early healing of wound and faster recovery. Add a lot of boiled vegetables and thick soups along with fruits like apples, pineapple, oranges, watermelons and any other seasonal fruits except bananas [Bananas may actually increase constipation].

Also move about and don't keep lying or sitting as movement stimulates the intestine to move. Use a stool softener for a few days while you try these measures but try to stop it as soon as possible as they are extremely habit forming.

Hope I was able to help you. Thanks for the query and have a happy recovery.
