Does The Light Patch On Upper Lip Denote Something Serious?

Hi, I have a like lighter patch of skin on my upper lip, i mean my lips are overall normal in terms of darkness or brightness but then my upper lip has this patch of pink which is lighter than the rest of my lips. The patch is in the middle of my upper lip and I've had this for a while now and I'm not sure what to do in terms of removing it or what it actually is please help thanks.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.

I would keep a possibility of mucosal vitiligo, which present as white/hypopigmented or pink colored patches over the labial mucosa.

Lip vitiligo is characteristically resistant to treatment/slow responding as compared to patches on face and trunk.

Various treatment modalities are:
--Topical Steroids
--Topical Tacrolimus
--Topical Basic fibroblast growth factor

When the topical modalities fail or prove ineffective, other options which can be tried are permanent tattoo and skin grafting. I would advice that after a fair trial of topical steroid (4-6 months)that you are using , you should consult with your dermatologist for a review of treatment.

take care
regards
