Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Cause Weight Gain?

I am wondering if my new hormone replacement I m taking is causing me to gain weight. It s estradiol. I was on Cenestin for 10 years; I just switched about 2 months ago. The scale will not budge. I don t eat more than 1600 calories EVER and I exercise vigorously 5-6 times a week.

Hello
Thank you for writing to us on Health care Magic.
Based on your history the response to your question is as follows.
1. Yes Hormone replacement therapy can cause weight gain.
2. Estradiol contains estrogen which is known to cause weight gain. It can reduce metabolism and increase cravings.
3. However, as your calories are limited and your exercise regimen is good, along with reduced metabolism secondary to estrogen, associated hypothyroidism also requires evaluation.
4. Do get a thyroid hormone profile done. If normal, then estrogen therapy would be the cause of weight gain.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.
Thank you
