Does High Levels Of ALT And GGPT Indicates Serious Liver Disease?

I have just read results of a blood examination and my ALT is 80. My bilirubin was 44 and AST was 25. I currently take blood pressure medicine (atenolol) and (lysinopril). I also have a total cholesterol level of 202 which I know isnt good. But, I'm kinda freakin out about the ALT and the GGTP Serum being at 101. I will definately consult my doctor, but can I somewhat relax until then or am I at serious risk of some sort of liver disease?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I have read your lab reports and understand your concerns. First I would say to not worry so much. Having these levels of ALT, GGT doesn't always mean a bad or a serious condition. The normal range of values for ALT (SGPT) is from 7 to 56 units depending from the kits that laboratories use and the range for GGT is 0-45 U/LALT/GGT can be slightly elevated in a lot of healthy patients and here are some of the main reasons:

- use of alcohol
- fatty liver (since your cholesterol level is 202 it might cause the changes in the liver enzymes)
- excessive amount of exercise
- stress
- use of medication that can damage cells of the liver like ibuprofen, paracetamol, and some types of antibiotics

Right now, don't worry too much. Wait to talk with your doctor and if needed he will do other tests. I would recommend an ultrasound of your abdomen to see if you have gallstones and put you on a healthy low fat diet to help your liver heal itself and it's enzymes to get back at normal range. The low fat diet, will help with your cholesterol also.

Have plenty of water, don't use alcohol, and have fresh fruits and vegetables. For liver enzymes to get back at normal range, we need to wait usually from 30 to 60 days or even more.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.

Regards,
Dr. Endri Katro
