Does Blocked Nose And Mouth Breathing Affect Oxygen Supply To The Brain?

I am 31 y.o. F, when I was 9-10 I had nose injury (rock hit my nose). Now I don t even think about it until I lay down. When I am in horizontal position my nose almost closes on me, I cannot take deep breath, so when I sleep breathing occur through the mouth. Should I be concerned about not getting enough oxygen in my brain? Thank you!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a 31 year old female having had nasal trauma at the age of 9-10 years, now developed nasal blockage on lying down, wants to know whether oxygenation to brain is hampered.
Yes, this is sleep apnoea and can caused reduced oxygenation to boty and brain.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, ENT Endoscopy, and MRI or CT scan of the nose, nasopharynx, sinuses.
All this will an exact cause of your nasal obstruction which is enhanced by lying down.
The most probable causes are antro-choanal polyp, deviated nasal septum or any mass.
May need corrective surgery for cure.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
