Does Tugain For Hair Thinning Cause Any Side Effects?

Hi, I am 29 years old female. I am suffering from hair thinning on top of my head. All the hormone blood tests like TSH, DHEAS, Free Testosterone, Prolactin values are all normal. I have been diagnosed as Vitamin D deficient and have a haemoglobin count of about 11. My doctor also thinks I might be deficient on Vitamin B12 and Vitamin C and has provided supplements for them. With this been said, she says I am experiencing Female Pattern Hair loss and has prescribed the medications as below. Along with this, she suggests I use Kera XL serum at night and Tugain Foam (5%) in the morning for hair loss. Please let me know if using Tugain is fine and wont cause any side effects in case of future pregnancy etc.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello concerned 29year old, thanks for writing to Hcm

i read your query and understand your concern is regarding tugain foam and if it has side effects.

if you were my patient,Yes,i would advise Tugain (minoxidil) which can used to treat female pattern hair loss also like you mentioned ,but i would prescribe a lower concentration of tugain 2% solution mostly.

i would strongly recommend you to stop using minoxidil while you are trying to conceive, when you are pregnant and when you breastfeed since there is no conclusive study with effects of such drug in pregnancy or breastfeeding ,but contraindicated in such cases.

if you were my patient, i would advise using it for a few months now and stop it when you trying to conceive and thereafter till you stop breast feeding.
Please discuss switching to alternative treatments with the doctor as you are planning to get pregnant

Hope it helps and clarifies.Followup if any more questions
Take care and good day
