Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband s kidney function was at 40 percent about a yr ago with a creatinine (blood serum one) around 2.9. After 6 mos on Clonidine for his BP and about a year later his creatinine was 5.19 - besides not preparing well for the blood test - could the BP med have hurt his kidneys and could it be reversible?
Hello, Your husband's kidneys had started to fail before he was started on Clonidine which is a medicine for high blood pressure. If he was having high blood pressure for a long time , it is a cause for the kidney failure. There are others like diabetes, urinary infection, stones, enlarged prostate and several other causes for kidney failure. Once the kidneys begin to fail then there is a tendency for the failure to become worse with time. With good control of blood pressure and diabetes if any and avoiding other causes like urinary infection, the speed with which the kidneys fail can be reduced to some extent but cannot be totally avoided. Clonidine is not a medicine that causes kidney failure and so stopping it is not going to reverse the failure. If you have further queries, I am willing to answer. Take Care Dr. Noble Zachariah
