Do Epileptic Seizures Cause Aggression And Anger?

my 13 yr old daughter developed epilepsy on the 6th sept this year a few yeeks before her 13th birthday, she had her first tonic clonic fit. these are now controlled by medication but she still has absence seizures and night time seizures. it has been difficult, she now seems to get very aggressive and angry easily is this connected with the epilepsy?

Neurologist 's  Response
According to your history and age of onset and seizure types it seems to be a case of Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Is there any jerky sudden movement of body for 1-2 seconds mostly in morning. EEG may be more helpful for diagnosis and MRI brain to rule out some other lesion. Some epilepsy may have behavioural symptoms too mostly frontal or temporal lobe epilepsy. But in your case it may be related to drug induced side effects. Is she on levetiracetam because it has got personality related side effects more than any drug else. Dose adjustment can be tried. Valproate is drug of choice for JME but levetiracetam is also showing good results with minimal side effects except for behavioural one. Consult your neurologist regarding these issues. May good help your daughter and she recovers early.
